“Antarctica” (2025) is a documentary by Anton Ptushkin about a Ukrainian expedition to the most remote continent on the planet. Together with the polar researchers at the Akademik Vernadsky Station, he explores a place where incredible landscapes conceal months of isolation, challenging scientific work, harsh nature, and animals found nowhere else.
What is the movie “Antarctica” about?
Anton Ptushkin’s journey begins with the trip to the Ukrainian Antarctic station Akademik Vernadsky, where he meets the polar researchers and sees their daily lives firsthand. There are none of the usual comforts here, and the weather can change any plans. The team spends months far from home, working and maintaining the station in harsh climatic conditions.
The film shows not only the expedition’s daily life but also the work of Ukrainian scientists. They monitor the atmosphere and weather while studying the ocean, glaciers, and the continent’s wildlife. This research helps track climate change and better understand processes that affect not only Antarctica but the entire planet.
A separate part of the journey focuses on the local inhabitants — penguins, seals, and other animals that have adapted to life among the ice. Ptushkin shows their natural environment while also drawing attention to just how vulnerable the Antarctic ecosystem is.
