“Russia Goodbye” (2025) is a Ukrainian drama about a woman who has spent her entire life living in a reality shaped by television and propaganda. Due to unexpected circumstances, she and her son end up in western Ukraine, where her beliefs slowly begin to collapse under the pressure of reality.
What is the movie “Russia Goodbye” about?
The events of the film take place in 2023. Rita is a confident TV host from occupied Horlivka who has spent years repeating Russian propaganda narratives on air and sincerely believes everything she says.
She supports Russian propaganda, repeats familiar narratives, and is convinced that Russia is the only place where she and her 10-year-old son can have a safe future. But when the situation becomes dangerous, Rita decides to flee the occupied territory.
Fate, however, suddenly changes their route. Instead of Russia, they accidentally end up in Uzhhorod. For Rita, it feels like an entirely different world — a city she had been taught for years to see as чужой and hostile. Here, among people she had learned to hate through television screens, she must for the first time live without scripts, cameras, and prepared phrases.
But reality turns out to be completely different from what she saw on television. Gradually, new acquaintances, simple acts of kindness, and honest conversations begin to destroy her understanding of the “right” side.
