This time, the filmmakers expand the Mavka Universe and turn to authentic Ukrainian mythology, where mavkas appear as dangerous and uncanny forest beings, far removed from fairy-tale images.

What is Mavka. The True Myth about?

The film unfolds in the ancient forests of Ukraine during Rusalka Week — a magical period when mythical creatures emerge from the Dark Lake to hunt for sinful human souls. Ignoring ominous warnings from local residents, a group of biology students ventures here on a scientific expedition. It is here that the fates of the main characters intertwine — the mystical forest nymph Mavka (Arina Bocharova) and the biologist Lukian (Ivan Dovzhenko).

Mavka breaks the ancient laws of the dark world by falling in love with a human. Instead of luring him to his death in the mysterious forest lake, where rusalkas and other mavkas prey on men’s souls, she chooses love. But the dark forces are unwilling to accept her choice and will stop at nothing to keep Mavka on their side.
