What is the “The Zone of Interest” movie about? 

Set during the Second World War, the film focuses on the everyday life of Rudolf Hess, who lives with his wife and five children near his work in a spacious two-story house with a large garden, greenhouse, and swimming pool. His wife, Hedwig, takes care of the small garden in her spare time when she is not looking after the five children. At first glance, their family life seems perfect, until you realize that Rudolf is the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, and people are dying behind their high fence every day.

The biographical drama “The Zone of Interest” is a loose adaptation of the novel of the same name by Martin Amis. The film was created jointly by filmmakers from the United States, Great Britain, and Poland. Most of the preparation time was spent on the sound catalog development: they carefully selected which sounds would be heard and at what volume. The concentration camp is not shown visually in the film - it can only be heard. For the filming, the set designers worked for several months to restore the abandoned Hess house, and plants were specially planted in the garden so that they would bloom during the filming. The main filming lasted 55 days in the summer of 2021 in Auschwitz.
