“The Peasants” is an animated historical drama for adults based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the same name by Wladyslaw Reymont. The story takes place in a Polish village at the turn of the twentieth century. The plot centers on 19-year-old Jagna, who is married off to an old widower named Maciej for a dowry. What is “The Peasants” about?

The story of Jagna takes place in a Polish village at the end of the 19th century, where a young woman has to live in an atmosphere of gossip, and constant conflicts between the rich and the poor, who stay together only because of pride in their land, loyalty to traditions and patriarchal principles. When Yagna decides to go her way, she finds herself caught between the conflicting desires of the village's richest farmer, his eldest son, and powerful men. Her resistance leads to a tragic clash with the village community.
Each scene was first filmed with actors, and then more than 100 artists from Ukraine, Poland, Serbia, and Lithuania created identical oil paintings. They drew inspiration from the style of prominent Polish painters of the period when the novel was written. In total, the artists' work lasted 4 years, during which they spent more than 200 thousand hours with their brushes in their hands.
